Russian Respect: Putin Calls Musk a Rare Visionary
At home in Moscow, the president highlights Musk as one of the greatest idea-bearers of our time.
On a cold Wednesday in Moscow, something remarkable occurred: Russian President Vladimir Putin used a public speech to praise one of the world’s most talked-about and controversial tech icons — American billionaire and SpaceX founder Elon Musk. The moment came during a visit to Bauman Moscow State Technical University, where Putin addressed students on innovation, space exploration, and human progress.
Musk and Korolev in the Same Breath
Midway through his speech, the president drew a striking parallel between Elon Musk and Sergei Korolev — the Soviet space pioneer who, in 1961, was responsible for launching the first human into orbit. Korolev is regarded as a national hero in Russia, making Putin’s comparison all the more significant:
“There is a man — he lives in the USA — Musk, who you could say raves about Mars.”
Putin’s words were no accident. In his speech, he emphasized individuals who carry ideas like fuel — people who defy the conventions of their time and push the boundaries of what seems possible. “Such people rarely appear in human history” he said.

Technology, Politics, and the Space Race
Putin’s praise of Musk comes at a time when relations between Russia and the United States have, in some respects, been thawing — particularly during the Trump administration, when Musk played a central role as an advisor and force of innovation. SpaceX has become an unavoidable player in the global space race, launching rockets for NASA and expanding the Starlink satellite network that connects parts of the world.
Although Musk has in recent times been a vocal critic of Ukraine’s leadership and its handling of the war with Russia, the focus of Putin’s speech was not the conflict, but the power of ideas.
“If it seems incredible today, it often turns out that such ideas become reality later,” he added, referring to the visionary projects of both Korolev and Musk.
From the Kremlin to the Cosmos
Elon Musk has never hidden his fascination with space and his desire to colonize Mars. With Putin’s remarks, he is now — at least rhetorically — being placed in the same category as the Soviet giants who laid the foundation for modern space exploration.
It’s a comparison that both surprises and sends a clear message: even across ideological divides, greatness and ambition can be recognized.
As the world’s geopolitical landscape shifts, one thing still seems to unite nations — the dream of the stars.
