Vietnam Ditches Russia – Opts for American F-16 Fighter Jets
A new defense shift is unfolding in East Asia as Vietnam upgrades its air force with at least 24 American F-16s.
Vietnam has decided to purchase at least 24 American-made F-16 fighter jets – marking a significant break from the Russian Su-27 and Su-30 models that have long formed the backbone of its air force.
Technical Pressure and Unreliable Support
Many of Vietnam’s Russian aircraft are nearing the end of their warranty period, and maintenance has become uncertain. According to 19FortyFive, Russian suppliers “were unwilling to continue supporting the platforms without large upfront payments.”
F-16V: Expensive, but Necessary
Affordable older F-16s are scarce, leaving Vietnam with the more advanced – and costly – F-16V model as the primary option. The U.S. is expected to assist with financing.
A Geopolitical Signal
The deal, which could become the largest defense agreement between Vietnam and the U.S. to date, sends a strong message to both China and Russia.
At the same time, Vietnam remains concerned about whether advanced weaponry like the AIM-120 AMRAAM will be approved for export.
