President Donald Trump has set the stage for a showdown over how American universities are accredited and funded with a new executive order.

The order grants the Secretary of Education the authority to intervene against accreditation agencies that fail to meet standards—even if that means revoking their authorization.

“We will hold them accountable—even if that means suspension or termination for poor performance or violations of civil rights laws,” said a White House official.

Multiple Cabinet Members to Investigate Educational Institutions

At the same time, the Attorney General and Secretary of Education are instructed to investigate discrimination at educational institutions—part of Trump’s broader criticism of diversity and inclusion programs.

Secretary Linda McMahon emphasized that universities should be based on meritocracy.

The executive order is accompanied by other initiatives, including a mandate for AI education in schools and a measure targeting foreign donations to universities, which the White House claims lack sufficient transparency. A new initiative will also be launched in support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

The Trump administration’s move signals a desire for increased political control over the academic world—and a significant shift in the relationship between the government and institutions of higher learning.
