U.S. Approval Secures New Defense System
The U.S. State Department has approved a potential sale of a Patriot air defense system to Romania valued at approximately $280 million. The new system is intended to replace the advanced Patriot PAC-3+ that Romania donated to Ukraine in the fall of 2024 as part of the international military support in response to the Russian invasion.
The U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency confirmed the sale and emphasized that the deal supports U.S. foreign policy goals and national security by strengthening a key allied partner in the region.
Romania’s Defense Bolstered After Donation
Last year, Romania chose to transfer one of its most advanced Patriot systems to Ukraine free of charge. The system, a PAC-3+ version, is equipped with the upgraded AN/MPQ-65 radar, offering extended range and enhanced capability to detect and identify ballistic missiles. President Klaus Iohannis approved the transfer through a decree in September 2024.
“This is a strong expression of our solidarity with Ukraine,” the Romanian government stated at the time.

Sweden and Norway Assist with Funding
To compensate for Romania’s military support to Ukraine and simultaneously strengthen NATO’s eastern flank, Sweden and Norway have contributed financially to the purchase of the new Patriot system. The system includes an AN/MPQ-65 radar, an AN/MSQ-132 engagement control station, two M903 launchers, as well as spare parts, training, and technical support.
The suppliers behind the upcoming system are U.S. companies Raytheon (RTX) and Lockheed Martin, which signed a production contract in December 2024. Initial deliveries are expected to be completed no later than the end of 2029.
Long-Term Defense Build-Up in Eastern Europe
The new sale is part of a broader strategic effort by the United States and its partners to secure air defense in Eastern Europe. According to the Pentagon, this type of support is crucial at a time when the region is facing increasingly complex threats.
“This sale will enhance the security of a key ally and contribute to stability in Europe,” the U.S. Department of Defense stated in its announcement.
