Warren Buffett has just announced that he will retire as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway at the end of 2025.

The news was shared at the company’s traditional annual shareholder meeting in Omaha, where the 94-year-old financial legend named Greg Abel as his successor.

“Greg (Abel, ed.) will be the CEO of the company by year’s end,” Buffett said, who has led the conglomerate since 1965.

Buffett’s retirement marks the close of an era. Through value-based investing and long-term strategies, he has left an indelible mark on global business thinking.

A Strong Critique of Protectionism

His farewell announcement came shortly after he voiced concern about the rise of protectionism in the U.S. and beyond during the same event.

Buffett has long championed open markets and free competition, and his recent criticism makes clear that he’s not afraid to speak out—even as he prepares to leave the stage.

With a leadership transition underway and the global economy evolving, Berkshire Hathaway is entering a new chapter—though not without the Oracle of Omaha having the final word.
