In a dramatic escalation of the long-standing conflict between India and Pakistan, the Pakistani military announced it had shot down five Indian fighter jets. According to a military spokesperson speaking to Reuters, the aircraft included three French-made Rafale jets, one Russian-built Su-30, and one MiG-29. All planes were reportedly struck while flying in Indian airspace.

“Five Indian aircraft were shot down. No Pakistani aircraft were lost,” said the spokesperson, who also confirmed multiple exchanges of fire along the contested Kashmir border.

Tactical Engagements and Military Symbolism

The Rafale jets are among the most modern in India’s air force and are equipped with Meteor missiles capable of striking targets beyond visual range. Compared to the older Soviet-era Su-30 and MiG-29 models, the Rafale represents a technological trial by fire in the region’s skies.

Pakistan has not presented independent verification of its claims, and the Indian authorities have yet to release an official response.

An Unstable Airspace

The situation has also rippled into civilian aviation. Qatar Airways has confirmed that it has temporarily suspended all flights to Pakistan. The decision follows the military developments and escalating tensions, raising concerns about the vulnerability of South Asia’s airspace.
