Fleeing the Border: Kashmir Residents Evacuated Amid Growing Conflict
As the conflict between India and Pakistan escalates, hundreds of civilians in Indian-administered Kashmir are being forced to leave their homes.
An order from Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, has triggered evacuation plans in “vulnerable areas.” The aim is to protect the civilian population after deadly attacks have struck both sides of the border.
Military Counteroffensive and Human Impact
The evacuation comes just hours after India launched airstrikes targeting what it describes as “terror infrastructure” in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
The operation, known as Operation Sindoor, was initiated in response to an earlier attack in Pahalgam, where 26 civilians were killed.
New Delhi blames Pakistan for the attack—an allegation Islamabad denies.
According to Pakistani sources, at least eight people, including children, were killed in the Indian strikes. Meanwhile, the Indian Army reported that three civilians died in crossfire with Pakistani forces.

Local authorities say that food, shelter, and medical aid will be provided to those evacuated. But fear is not so easily quelled. Many residents have experienced repeated escalations and see this latest development as yet another chapter in a cycle they cannot escape.
India’s Home Minister, Amit Shah, wrote on X that he is “proud of our armed forces,” calling the operation a fitting response: “The Modi government is determined to uproot terrorism at its core,” he said.
