Ballistic Missiles and Daily Strikes: The US Raises Alert Level in Kyiv
Three warnings in less than six months – the situation in Ukraine grows more serious by the day.
Repeated US Warnings
The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv has once again issued a serious message to its citizens.
This time, the message warns of being prepared for “a potential significant air attack in the coming days.”
The warning, published on the embassy’s official website, is the third of its kind since the fall of 2024.
The warning comes with a strong recommendation: “We advise U.S. citizens to be ready to seek shelter immediately upon an air raid alarm.” This echoes messages from both November and December 2024, when similar notices were disseminated amid escalating Russian attacks.
A Turning Point in Warfare Technology
On November 21, 2024, the city of Dnipro was the target of a historic attack.
For the first time ever, an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) was used in combat.
The missile, launched from the Russian test site Kapustin Yar, hit its target in central Ukraine. Vladimir Putin later named this weapon “Oreshnik.”
The attack made waves far beyond Ukraine’s borders. It was not only a technological breakthrough in Russian military strategy but also an overt display of willingness to escalate.
A spokeswoman from the U.S. Department of Defense, Sabrina Singh, stated shortly afterward that they anticipated Russia might reuse missiles from the same system in the future.

Drones as Everyday Fear
Since the beginning of 2025, the pattern has been marked by frequent, almost daily attacks with Iranian Shahed drones, and the so-called Geranium variants.
These attacks have created a constant uncertainty and forced locals to live with the risk of destruction and death from above. In this light, the warnings from the U.S. do not come across as alarmist overreactions but as necessary precautions.
The Alarm Sounds More Often
Since the first warning in November, where the embassy wrote: “We recommend that all U.S. citizens follow local authorities’ guidance and seek shelter immediately in the event of an air raid alarm,” the situation has only grown more severe.
The overt fear of further ballistic missile attacks underscores the need for the population to remain vigilant.
It is no longer enough to simply hope it doesn’t hit oneself. In Kyiv and the rest of Ukraine, fear has become part of daily life, and ominous messages from abroad are no longer news but almost expectations.
