The hope for peace was severely undermined just hours after India and Pakistan reached a historic ceasefire agreement.

Explosions were heard over the Indian-administered part of Kashmir the very same night, and what was meant to be a turning point now risks becoming yet another episode in a prolonged conflict.

Fragile Agreement Teeters

Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the two nuclear powers had agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire— the result of intense American diplomacy after two weeks of violent clashes in the Kashmir region.

Missile strikes from both sides had hit military targets, reigniting the tense border dispute.

However, the peace agreement quickly faced setbacks.

Shortly after its enactment, explosions were reported in the cities of Kashmir, Jammu, and Udhampur. Red flashes and fireballs lit up the night sky as residents sought shelter.

India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated at a press conference, “There have been repeated violations of the agreement.”

Conflicting Narratives

Pakistan, however, denies all allegations. According to the country’s information minister, there have been “no violations,” and Pakistan adheres to the terms of the agreement.

The Prime Minister has called the ceasefire “a new beginning” and urges dialogue over confrontation.

The disagreement reveals the deep mistrust between the two countries.

Analysts warn that even the slightest provocation along the border could ignite a new conflict. As Sky News correspondent Neville Lazarus puts it, “India will not hesitate to retaliate if the ceasefire has been breached.”
