A Long-awaited Call

After 583 days in captivity in Gaza, 21-year-old American-Israeli soldier Edan Alexander was finally released by Hamas on Monday.

Through intense negotiations between the United States and the Palestinian Authority, the last living American hostage in the region was transferred to Israeli authorities via the Red Cross.

Escorted by a convoy from the Israel Defense Forces, Edan finally had the chance to speak with his mother, Yael. Over the phone, her first words were: “You are strong, you are safe, you are home.”

In the background, the family awaited to see him with their own eyes – no longer as a missing name, but as a living son, brother, and friend.

Temporary Ceasefire and a Symbolic Moment

The Israeli military confirmed that during the release, a temporary pause in military operations was observed in the area of Gaza where the handover took place.

No drones were flown, no rockets were fired, and no air raids were conducted in the crucial hours.

This meant that Edan’s return happened in relative calm – a rare peaceful moment amidst an unbearable conflict.

The release, according to U.S. officials, is the result of direct talks between the United States and Hamas, and it is seen as a potential opening in the seemingly stalled negotiations for a broader ceasefire.

Hamas stated that the release is “a step towards a ceasefire,” underscoring the symbolic politics in play.

From Captivity to Embrace of Freedom

Edan Alexander was captured during Hamas’s attack on October 7, 2023 – just 19 years old at the time.

Two birthdays later, he now steps out of the shadows and into the light as a testament to resilience and international attention.

His release was met with joy and relief both in Israel and in his hometown of Tenafly, New Jersey, where locals gathered in Huyler Park to celebrate the long-awaited breakthrough.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the moment as “deeply moving” and thanked former U.S. President Donald Trump for his political support.

A Single Person – and the Many Waiting

While the joy over Edan’s return is palpable, it is also filled with contrasts.

Fifty-seven hostages remain in Gaza, with at least 20 believed to be alive. “Edan’s release is a glimmer of hope, but also a reminder of those who are still missing,” says the Hostages and Missing Families Forum.

The release of Edan Alexander is a symbolic embrace – a stretched hope that human rights and reconciliation are not entirely lost concepts, even in the quagmire of politics and war.
