Trump on the Brink: The Poll That Could Shake Up the Midterm Elections
A new Republican poll puts Trump back in the driver’s seat – but not without resistance and caution.
A new poll from the Republican-leaning Quantus Insights reveals that Donald Trump’s support among American voters has reached a surprising turning point. With 48.2% support and 48.3% opposition, the former president suddenly finds himself with an approval rating that is effectively balanced. The poll, conducted from May 5 to May 7 among 1,000 registered voters, has a margin of error of ±3.1 percentage points, making the result statistically even.
Political Barometer Ahead of 2026
Approval ratings are more than just numbers. They act as mood barometers for voter sentiment and can be crucial for politicians, especially leading up to elections. With the 2026 midterm elections on the horizon, timing is critical. An improved rating can give Trump momentum, while continued declines will bolster his opponents’ narrative.
According to Newsweek, Professor of International Politics Scott Lucas points out that “Trump’s language on tariffs has started to soften,” which may help explain the shift. He also cautions against reading too much into a single poll: “Polls have their own biases.”
Mixed Signals
While some polls, like one from Big Data on May 5, show slight progress (net +0.6%), others paint a more dire picture. A study from Navigator Research, for instance, indicated that Trump’s economic approval has sunk to -16 percentage points. Even among conservative voters, there has been a decline: from 77% to 72% according to TIPP Insights.
Meanwhile, Trump himself uses his platform, Truth Social, to beat the optimistic drum: “Together, we are making America greater, stronger, richer, healthier, and more religious than it has ever been before!!!”
