Zelensky Mocks Russian Delegation: ‘A Theater Prop – Not a Peace Delegation’
Ukraine’s president questions Russia’s intentions in Turkey, calling their delegation a performance lacking substance.
Volodymyr Zelensky wasted no time in commenting on Russia’s latest diplomatic move as he arrived in Ankara on Wednesday ahead of a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
In his first statement to the press, he took aim at the Russian delegation, which had simultaneously arrived in Istanbul for possible talks.
“It looks more like a theater prop than anything serious,” Zelensky said, stressing that there has still been no official clarification on what the Russians actually hope to achieve in Turkey.
“We’re in contact with the Americans, and I believe they’ll be represented at a high level. As for Russia, we’ll have to wait and see – but one thing we do know: who really makes the decisions in the Kremlin.”
Old Faces, Same Agenda
According to the Kremlin, the Russian delegation will be led by Vladimir Medinsky – a close ally of Vladimir Putin and the same figure who led the failed negotiations in Istanbul back in 2022.
Medinsky’s reappointment as chief negotiator has raised eyebrows and sparked criticism, especially due to the absence of two experienced diplomats, Yuri Ushakov and Sergey Lavrov – both of whom have previously been involved in high-level discussions with U.S. officials.
Observers suggest this could indicate Russia is attempting to revive a negotiation track that was previously dismissed as ineffective and marked by unrealistic demands from the Russian side.
Those demands included limitations on Ukraine’s military capacity and sovereignty.

A Show for Appearances
Former Russian diplomat Boris Bondarev – who resigned in protest of the war – believes the Kremlin’s motives are not about peace but about optics. “This is just a show – a simulation of peace talks,” he told The Guardian.
He argues that the real goal is to influence U.S. domestic politics by appearing open to negotiations with Donald Trump, all while combat operations on the ground continue unabated.
Theater
Both Zelensky’s strong remarks and Bondarev’s assessment suggest that the Russian initiative in Istanbul is, above all, a strategic performance rather than a sign of genuine diplomatic progress.
