Pentagon Tightens Grip: Transgender Soldiers to Undergo Health Assessment
A new military policy orders commanders to identify transgender individuals in their units. Experts warn of a repeat of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’.
Health Assessments with a Hidden Agenda
The U.S. Department of Defense is implementing a new protocol where transgender soldiers and individuals diagnosed with gender dysphoria are to be identified through annual health assessments.
Instead of directly accessing medical records, as previously considered, a new section on gender dysphoria is now part of the routine health evaluation.
Troops who do not disclose their status but are suspected by their superiors or colleagues may be called in for medical evaluation.
This could result in separation from service. “It is the responsibility of service members and commanders to ensure compliance,” a senior Pentagon official stated, according to the Associated Press.
No Guarantee of Continued Service
The guidelines are part of President Donald Trump’s reinstated ban on transgender individuals in the military.
The policy comes into effect following the Supreme Court’s decision to allow the ban to be implemented despite ongoing lawsuits.
The ban does not offer automatic exemptions for those already serving and provides only limited exceptions.
The Pentagon anticipates that approximately 1,000 individuals will voluntarily exit the service, thereby potentially receiving double the severance pay.
According to official data from December 2024, 4,240 service members have been diagnosed with gender dysphoria, though the actual number is believed to be higher.

Policy Echoes from the Past
Critics draw parallels to “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” where gay individuals were not allowed to serve openly in the military.
Many were forced out then after being outed by superiors or colleagues. Now, there is the same risk regarding the identification of transgender individuals.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has been a key figure in this policy overhaul. His statement “No more dudes in dresses. We’re done with that s—,” made his stance crystal clear.
He also posted the ominous phrase on social media: “No More Trans @ DoD”.
The Future for Those Affected
Active-duty transgender individuals must volunteer by June 6, while the National Guard and Reserve have until July 7.
Those who do so, as mentioned, can receive increased compensation. However, those who do not step forward face a process that could be both humiliating and devastating.
