Trump Promises Peace – But Russia Sends 100 Drones Against Ukraine
A two-hour conversation between Trump and Putin was supposed to kickstart peace talks. Hours later, drones rained down on Ukraine.
While Donald Trump on Monday night spoke of “immediate” peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, the sky over Kyiv and several other Ukrainian cities lit up.
Over 100 Russian drones were sent across the border, and according to Ukrainian air defense, they managed to shoot down 35, while an additional 58 were disrupted or neutralized in the air.
Nevertheless, damage was reported in four regions.
The drone strike occurred shortly after Trump had spoken with Vladimir Putin on the phone for two hours. In a statement to the press, Trump subsequently said: “I think something is happening. These are big egos, I’m just saying, big egos, but I think something is happening. If I thought that Putin would not end this, I would not spend my time.”
Putin: “Root Causes Must Be Eliminated”
From the Russian side, the tone was different. “Russia’s position is clear,” stated Putin. “The most important thing for us is to eliminate the root causes of this crisis.”
A statement that heralds continued firmness in Moscow’s demands, including the annexation of four Ukrainian regions, retention of Crimea, and blocking Ukrainian NATO membership.
However, Trump insisted that a peace deal is within reach. In a post on his platform Truth Social, he wrote that “negotiations between Russia and Ukraine will start immediately.”

Zelensky: We Are Ready
On the Ukrainian side, there was little confidence in Moscow’s intentions. President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on Telegram: “I confirmed to President Trump that we in Ukraine are ready for a complete and unconditional ceasefire.” He emphasized that it is now up to Russia to show willingness for peace: “If the Russians are not ready to stop the killings, there must be stronger sanctions.”
Although Trump sees himself as the one who can breathe life into a new beginning in the conflict, the latest night suggests that the logic of war once again trumps diplomatic promises. Ukraine remains in a state of emergency while the world waits to see if words from Washington will materialize into real steps toward peace.
