Jamie Dimon, the long-serving and notable CEO of JPMorgan Chase, has issued a stark warning: The US risks falling into stagflation, an economic situation characterized by high inflation combined with low growth and rising unemployment.

Speaking at the bank’s Global China Summit in Shanghai, Dimon pointed to a concerning mix of geopolitical turmoil, growing budget deficits, and persistent price pressures as a recipe for a potentially dangerous economic cocktail.

No “sweet spot”

“I do not agree that we are in a sweet spot,” said Dimon in an interview with Bloomberg.

He also supported the current strategy of the US central bank to wait before making new interest rate moves. “The Federal Reserve is doing the right thing by waiting and watching,” he said.

The US central bank has so far kept interest rates steady in 2025, citing a solid economic backdrop but also keeping a keen eye on the potential implications of policy decisions such as tariffs and the national budget.

A world in upheaval

The global turmoil is not just something JPMorgan observes from the outside. The bank has just launched its own Center for Geopolitics, focusing on analyses of places like Russia, Ukraine, and the Middle East.

While the US economy continues to show signs of strength, Jamie Dimon sends a clear signal that the foundation is fragile.

With a growing deficit, geopolitical uncertainty, and pressure on price levels, according to the JPMorgan CEO, there is good reason for vigilance. A political and economic shift may be necessary to prevent stagflation from becoming more than just a shadow on the horizon.
