The American President Donald Trump has stirred controversy with a new announcement regarding Europe’s trade relations.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, he recommends imposing a 50% tariff on all goods from the EU, effective from June 1, 2025. However, the decision has not yet been made.

Trade Deficit of 250 Billion Dollars

Trump criticizes the EU’s trade practices, accusing them of creating an annual American deficit exceeding 250 billion dollars. He points to ‘strong trade barriers, VAT, unfair corporate penalties, and monetary manipulations’ as the causes of the imbalance.

The European Union, which was formed with the primary purpose of taking advantage of the USA in trade matters, has been very difficult to negotiate with, Trump writes in the post

A Stalled Negotiation Path

According to Trump, talks with the EU have stalled. Therefore, he now sees a significant tariff increase as a possible solution. However, no specific legislative proposal or administrative decision has been presented yet – the proposal should initially be seen as a political recommendation.

‘There is no tariff if the product is built or made in the USA,’ he emphasizes, thus also appealing to domestic production.

Exporters Warn of Consequences

The recommendation has set off alarm bells among European exporters and investors. A potential 50% tariff would impact everything from cars and machinery parts to luxury goods and food products – and could trigger a mutual escalation if the EU retaliates.

Economists warn that a new trade conflict between the USA and the EU could have consequences far beyond the direct actors and create uncertainty in global markets.
