Russian Border Provocation: Two Fighter Jets Over Finnish Airspace

A recent breach of Finnish airspace has caused renewed unrest in the Nordic region. According to the Finnish Ministry of Defence, two Russian military aircraft are suspected of violating Finland’s airspace on May 23, 2025. The incident occurred in the afternoon near the city of Porvoo, east of the capital, Helsinki.

Investigation Underway

The Finnish Ministry of Defence has launched an official investigation into the incident. The suspected violation occurred over the central part of the Gulf of Finland, an area where air traffic from Russia and NATO often crosses paths in international airspace.

Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen stated:

We take the suspected violation seriously and are thoroughly investigating the matter.

This is not the first time this year that Finland has had to respond to Russian air activity. On February 7, 2025, a Russian government aircraft was suspected of being in Finnish airspace for several minutes near the Hanko Peninsula.

Increased Tensions Since NATO Membership

Since Finland officially became a member of NATO, there has been a notable increase in Russian military activity close to the Finnish border. This has heightened the readiness of the Finnish air force, which now operates two fully equipped squadrons of American-built F-18C fighter jets.

These fighter jets routinely patrol along the border and participate in NATO’s joint operations in the Baltic region, where they play a central role in intercepting and escorting Russian aircraft.

Regional Escalation

The recent incident in Porvoo aligns with a broader trend. Just a few months earlier, on July 15, Swedish and Finnish fighter jets together took off to escort Russian fighter jets over international airspace in the Baltic Sea. The operation was launched based on reports from NATO’s Combined Air Operations Center in Germany.

Episodes like these spotlight the geopolitical tensions unfolding in the Nordic area – a strategically important region increasingly becoming a focal point for great power demonstrations.

With NATO as a security net and Russia as the nearest neighbor, Finland’s role in the region has become more central – and more exposed.
