Euphoric Victory, Tragic Night: Two Dead and Hundreds Arrested After PSG Triumph
PSG made history in the Champions League – but the celebrations turned Paris and several other cities into flashpoints.
What was meant to be a celebration of football’s beauty and unity instead spiraled into a night of violence, chaos, and tragedy.
After Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secured the club’s first-ever Champions League title, the streets of the capital and other French cities erupted in unrest.
Shortly after the final whistle, large crowds began gathering on the Champs-Élysées. According to TF1-LCI, up to 3,000 people were present in the area, where the atmosphere quickly shifted from euphoria to open confrontation with police.
By 2 a.m., 294 people had been arrested, and that number soon climbed to 426 – the vast majority in Paris.
Multiple Fatalities
But arrests weren’t the only dark mark on the night. Two tragic deaths cast a somber shadow over the celebrations.
A 17-year-old boy lost his life in Dax (Landes) after being stabbed in the chest. The attacker is still at large. In Paris’ 15th arrondissement, a 20-year-old woman died when her scooter was struck by a car carrying football fans.
Several other cities – including Alençon, Poitiers, Annemasse, Pau, and Nantes – also experienced unrest, vandalism, and dangerous incidents. In Alençon, a car crashed directly into an insurance office during a street race, and in Poitiers, police came under attack.
Firefighters were overwhelmed, responding to 148 fires in the capital alone.
At the same time, 46 vehicles were set on fire, and 13 police officers were injured. Authorities also reported 192 injuries among demonstrators.
While PSG continues preparations for their victory parade, the Champs-Élysées still bears the scars of a violent night.
The tension between joy and sorrow, between the power of football and the fragility of society, played out in dramatic contrast on Sunday night.
