During the Shangri-La Dialogue security conference in Singapore, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth warned that China is preparing for a potential invasion of Taiwan. “The threat posed by China is not just theoretical. It’s real and could be imminent,” Hegseth stated.

Dress Rehearsals for Invasion

Hegseth pointed to Chinese military exercises around Taiwan as clear signs of escalation.

According to him, these exercises serve as “dress rehearsals” for a possible blockade or direct action against the island.

Asia Should Look to Europe

The defense secretary urged U.S. allies in Asia to increase their military readiness. He highlighted the growing defense spending among European NATO countries as a model, emphasizing: “Deterrence is not free.”

Criticism of Chinese Aggression

At the same time, Hegseth criticized China’s behavior in the South China Sea, accusing the country of illegally militarizing areas and harassing its neighbors.

Chinese Response

China reacted strongly to the speech. Da Wei from Tsinghua University called it “uncompromising and confrontational,” while former colonel Zhou Bo dismissed the exercises as indicators of any imminent invasion.

Global Focus on the Taiwan Strait

As tensions continue to escalate, the Taiwan Strait has once again become a flashpoint that could potentially shift the balance of power in the entire Indo-Pacific region.
