Tesla Loses Access to the Turnpike

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) has signed an exclusive agreement with a single charging provider, thereby barring Tesla from continuing operation of its 64 Supercharger stations along the route. In response, Tesla has built 116 new chargers off the highway as a replacement.

Offer to Expand Was Rejected

Tesla states that it offered NJTA an expansion of its charging stations at all service areas, including technical upgrades and support for multiple plug types. The goal was to foster collaboration and boost capacity — something Tesla believes is crucial for the broader adoption of electric vehicles.

Musk Responds Sharply

Elon Musk reacted to the decision with the words: “Sounds like corruption.”

Tesla sees NJTA’s decision as a step away from the goal of achieving 100% zero-emission vehicles by 2035 and emphasizes that Superchargers offer high reliability and low prices.
