A serious software malfunction has prompted Volkswagen to recall a total of 20,010 SUVs in Canada. The issue affects the vehicles’ rearview camera, which in some cases fails to display the image correctly while reversing—a defect that, according to Transport Canada, violates current safety standards.
The recall applies specifically to the 2024 and 2025 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models. Due to the error, drivers may lose visual awareness of objects or people behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of accidents.
Transport Canada emphasizes that it is a legal requirement for vehicles to provide a clear and accurate rearview image while backing up—and that VW’s system currently fails to meet this standard. The authority warns that impaired rear visibility can lead to serious incidents.
Owners of affected vehicles will receive a notification by mail with instructions to visit an authorized dealership, where a free software update will be installed to fix the issue.
At the same time, Toyota has issued a recall of over 440,000 vehicles in the North American market
The Japanese automaker identified a fault in the backup lights of the Toyota Tundra and Tundra Hybrid models, which may fail over time due to moisture intrusion—yet another reminder of the critical role visibility and signaling play in modern driving.
