On the battlefield in war-torn Ukraine, a new type of front-line fighter has emerged. It has no pulse, no fear, and it advances without flinching in the face of gunfire. It is a land drone, and in the hands of the K-2 Regiment, it is now saving lives.

Within just four days, operators from the 20th Independent Unmanned Drone Regiment, also known as K-2, have conducted four successful evacuations directly from the front line.

The remote-controlled unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) were sent into the combat zone to retrieve wounded soldiers – bringing them to safety without further human risk.

Footage from the evacuations shows how the land drones – including the “Makhno” model – maneuver to the wounded amidst the active combat area. After the rescue, the soldiers were transported further in armored Dingo vehicles.

A New Form of Heroism

K-2 Regiment’s commander, Kyrylo Veres, puts it succinctly: “Four days, four lives saved. It was our brothers from the infantry and storm units, with whom we stand side by side, that were pulled out.”

He emphasizes that technology is rewriting the rules of war, not just for K-2 but for the entire Ukrainian defense.

It is no longer only in the air and at sea that unmanned systems are revolutionizing the nature of warfare.

Now, the battle is moving to the ground – and here, drones have become the unseen heroes of the wounded.

Technology in National Service

The Ukrainian state has set a goal in 2025 to deliver 15,000 ground-based robotic units to the military.

Most are produced within Ukraine itself, as foreign models are far more expensive.

K-2’s land drones prove that courage doesn’t always wear a uniform. Sometimes it comes on tracks, remote-controlled from a hidden location, with a clear mission: to save lives.
