Elon Musk has thrown himself into a new political battle, this time not as a campaign backer, but as the potential leader of a new political movement.

Following a public and toxic fallout with Donald Trump, Musk now hints at founding a party to unite the Americans he describes as the ‘80% in the middle.’

It all started with a poll on Musk’s social platform X, where he asked his 220 million followers: ‘Is it time to create a new political party in the USA that truly represents the majority?’ The response was clear: Around 80% voted yes. Musk’s own response: ‘The people have spoken. A new party is needed. And exactly 80% agree… It’s destiny.’

The day after, he unveiled the name: The America Party. A name that shares a lineage with Musk’s former super-PAC, America PAC, which in 2024 donated over 200 million dollars to Trump’s campaign, making Musk the president’s most generous donor.

But the ties have now been severed. The break was triggered by Musk’s criticism of Trump’s controversial ‘Big, Beautiful Bill,’ which he described as a ‘monstrosity’ and urged his followers to oppose.

Soon after, more controversial ammunition came: Musk alleged in a now-deleted post that Trump is implicated in Jeffrey Epstein’s cases.

At the same time, he liked a post that read: ‘Trump should be impeached.’

Trump responded in his own media universe, Truth Social: ‘Elon was wearing out. I asked him to leave the White House.’ And in a conversation with NBC, Trump stated that Musk ‘will have to face the consequences’ if he chooses to support the Democrats.

Even though the fronts seem firmly drawn, some political observers predict the feud may prove fleeting. ‘In a month, they’ll be sitting together again,’ predicted Republican Congressman Jimmy Patronis.

For now, however, a real political earthquake threatens. If Musk follows through on his initiative, it could challenge the American two-party system as few have managed before.

With his ability to mobilize millions of followers and his intriguing combination of zeal and resources, it’s hard to dismiss the possibility that The America Party might become more than just a passing online frenzy.
