Rearview Camera Malfunction Prompts Major Recall

Volkswagen Canada has issued a recall affecting 20,010 SUVs due to a software issue that may prevent the rearview camera image from displaying correctly. Transport Canada reports that the affected vehicles fail to meet current safety standards, which require a clear and reliable rearview image when reversing.

In the impacted models, the screen may appear blurry, distorted, or fail to display an image altogether when the vehicle is put in reverse – potentially hindering the driver’s ability to see what’s behind the vehicle.

Increased Risk of Accidents

This malfunction could make it difficult for drivers to detect obstacles, pedestrians, or other vehicles, significantly increasing the risk of collisions, especially in tight spaces or populated areas.

Transport Canada emphasizes that limited rear visibility poses a serious safety hazard not just for drivers, but also for others around the vehicle.

Free Update Available at Dealerships

Volkswagen has announced that owners of the affected models will receive a notification by mail. They’ll be instructed to visit their nearest authorized dealership, where technicians will install a free software update to correct the issue.

The recall applies specifically to the Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport models from the 2024 and 2025 model years.

How to Check if Your SUV Is Affected

If you own one of the listed models, you can call Volkswagen Canada at 1-800-822-8987 or check the Transport Canada Vehicle Recalls Database online to verify whether your vehicle is impacted.
