This weekend, Los Angeles became the focal point of a nationwide wave of protests against President Donald Trump’s tightening of immigration policies.

With over 120 arrests during ICE raids and the controversial deployment of the National Guard in the city, thousands of demonstrators reclaimed the streets in a rebellion balancing between peaceful protest and open confrontations.

A City in a State of Emergency

Sunday afternoon, demonstrators were met by a massive police presence equipped with shields, batons, and “less-lethal” weapons.

Tear gas and flashbang grenades were deployed at several locations, and reports emerged of fireworks and stone-throwing against officers.

The protests culminated with the blocking of Highway 101 and the setting fire to several autonomous vehicles.

Amidst the chaos, voices for peace also emerged. “We are not afraid of you!” a protest leader shouted through a megaphone at the heavily armed soldiers outside the federal complex.

Another banner read: “National Guard LOL.” The anger first sparked by the immigration raids was further ignited by the decision to commandeer control of California’s National Guard.

A Confrontation Between the States and the State

California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass sharply criticized Trump’s decision. “This is a severe violation of state sovereignty,” said Newsom, demanding the deployment be halted.

Bass referred to the situation as “the last thing Los Angeles needs” while the city is still recovering from recent natural disasters.

The President’s response was clear: an additional 2,000 soldiers were deployed, with further escalations potentially on the horizon.

According to the U.S. military, 500 Marines are already on “standby” in case of further unrest.

“An Authoritarian Shift”

The criticism has spread far beyond California’s borders. Senator Bernie Sanders called the situation “a threat to America’s democracy” and warned: “We have a president steering the country rapidly towards authoritarianism.” Democratic governors in other states also labeled the deployment as “an alarming abuse of power.”

As thousands gathered in LA’s streets in a surge of anger and hope, both the city and the nation had to face that the battle over immigration has transformed into a struggle over the very core values of the Constitution.

With the prospect of 30 days of continued ICE raids in California, there are no signs of the unrest subsiding anytime soon.
