Curfew After Dark: Los Angeles in a State of Political Emergency
While Trump praises the military presence, California authorities try to quell unrest with law and order.
After four days of growing protests and escalations in the streets, Los Angeles has now reached a turning point.
Tuesday evening, a curfew was enforced in a small designated area of downtown LA, where anger has manifested in the form of graffiti, shattered shop windows, and nightly confrontations with the police.
“We must stop the actors who are exploiting the president’s chaotic escalation,” stated Mayor Karen Bass in a social media post. She emphasized that individuals violating the curfew between 8 PM and 6 AM would be arrested and prosecuted.
A City in the Crossfire
The unrest stems from a series of aggressive immigration raids carried out by ICE, which many locals describe as arbitrary and frightening. Governor Gavin Newsom accuses the Trump administration of using the National Guard and marines to further these raids.
“This situation was dying down and was limited to a few streets. But that was not what Donald Trump wanted,” Newsom said in a speech Tuesday night according to USA-Today. “He chose escalation, he chose more power, he chose theater over public safety.”

Massive Federal Presence
In a matter of days, the number of National Guard troops in the city has doubled to 4,000, and an additional 700 marines have been deployed.
The Pentagon estimates that the operation will cost over 130 million dollars. President Trump defended the decision on Truth Social: “If we hadn’t sent the Guard out – Los Angeles would be burning right now!”
Simultaneously, confrontations between protesters and police have led to the use of pepper spray, stun grenades, and over 150 arrests. Many of these took place the night before the curfew was imposed.
A City with an Eye on the Future
The damage is still geographically limited, but the visual traces of conflict are evident. “The graffiti is extensive,” Mayor Bass said, noting the need for a massive cleanup in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
How and when calm will be restored remains uncertain. A judge has scheduled a hearing Thursday in the lawsuit Newsom has filed against Trump for illegal use of the military. Meanwhile, Los Angeles balances between a political showdown and the unbearable frustration of its population.
