Following the United States’ extensive attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities, known as “Operation Midnight Hammer,” Iran’s parliament has proposed closing the Strait of Hormuz – one of the world’s most critical oil passages.

This recommendation came on Sunday after an intense vote in parliament, where an overwhelming majority supported this drastic countermeasure.

Hormuz – The World’s Oil Strategic Center

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow passage between Iran and Oman, is crucial for the global economy.

Approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil production passes through this strait daily. A closure of the strait would have catastrophic consequences for global energy supplies.

U.S. Precision Strikes Escalate the Conflict

Tensions reached new heights following Saturday’s American bombing campaign, where seven B2 stealth bombers dropped 14 so-called Massive Ordinance Penetrator (MOP) bombs on two key Iranian nuclear facilities, including the heavily fortified Fordow plant.

The attack also included missile launches at a third facility from U.S. submarines.

President Donald Trump described the operation as successful, but the U.S. military commander, General Dan Caine, stressed that the extent of the damage is still unclear.

Iran Warns of Retaliation

“The parliament has concluded that the Strait of Hormuz should be closed, but the final decision rests with the Supreme National Security Council,” said Revolutionary Guard Commander and member of the parliamentary security commission, Ismail Kowsari, according to Newsweek.

The ultimate decision on retaliation now lies with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the country’s security council.

Global Energy Markets Hold Their Breath

Uncertainty about the fate of the strait is sending shockwaves through global energy markets, which must now prepare for potential price hikes and supply disruptions.

The Strait of Hormuz is an essential component of the international energy supply, and any blockade could quickly escalate into a severe global crisis.
