The United States has conducted a comprehensive airstrike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, which, according to President Donald Trump, resulted in the facilities being ‘completely and totally destroyed.’

The attack marks the first time the US has used so-called ‘bunker-buster’ bombs in combat, highlighting the seriousness of the action.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made it clear in a press conference that the purpose of the strikes was not to force a regime change in Iran.

‘Iran is now calculating the reality that planes flew unnoticed all the way from central USA in Missouri and hit three of their most sensitive facilities,‘ Hegseth said, according to Bloomberg, emphasizing that the intent was solely military, not political.

The Middle East Holds Its Breath

Although the aim is not regime change, the operation has sent shockwaves through the region.

Iran quickly responded by directing attacks against Israel and announced that the country would use ‘all available means’ to defend itself.

The Gulf states have called for restraint, while both China and Russia have criticized the US actions without promising military support to Iran.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called the attacks a ‘dangerous escalation’ on the part of the US, while Iran’s foreign minister plans to meet with Putin in the coming week.

The international community is watching with great concern over the conflict, which has the potential to escalate further.

Economic Consequences

The global oil markets are particularly attentive to the situation as approximately a quarter of the world’s oil trade passes through the Strait of Hormuz.

Vice President JD Vance warns Iran that any attempt to block this strategic route would be economic suicide for the country.

At the same time, cargo ships have already begun to reroute their paths to avoid potential attacks.

Both Greece and the United Kingdom have issued recommendations for their ships to avoid areas close to Iran.

Uncertainty Ahead

Although Defense Secretary Hegseth insists there is no intention of regime change, many fear that this escalation could lead to a larger conflict with unpredictable consequences.

The coming days and weeks will be crucial in determining how the situation unfolds and whether the US military actions will result in a lasting shift in the balance of power in the region.
