Belgium and the Netherlands Provide Crucial Weaponry Against Sea Mines to Ukraine
Ukraine has just received a pivotal boost to its naval capacity with two advanced minesweepers from Belgium and the Netherlands.
The handover took place at an official ceremony at the naval base in Zeebrugge, Belgium, where the Ukrainian Navy flag was raised aboard the new vessels, Mariupol and Melitopol.
The two ships, formerly known as the Belgian Narcis and Dutch Vlaardingen, are part of the Alkmaar-class – also known as the Tripartite class.
They are equipped with advanced sonar and robotic technology, enabling them to effectively detect and neutralize sea mines.
“The minesweepers are beginning a new chapter under a new flag with a new mission,” stated Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans at the ceremony. He also emphasized the symbolic significance of the handover: “A future where the Black Sea is open and free, and Ukrainian cities are no longer occupied.”
In addition to the two ships already delivered, Ukraine is expected to receive another vessel of the same class from the Netherlands later this year, which will be named Henichesk.
Thus, historical names from past Ukrainian minesweepers, which have played a significant role in the country’s maritime history, are being revived.
With this European assistance, Ukraine marks a critical milestone in efforts to ensure free and secure waters in the Black Sea.
The new minesweepers are set not only to enhance Ukraine’s capability to clear sea mines but also to provide logistical support and supply transport in a conflict-ridden region.
Belgium, France, and the Netherlands originally developed the Alkmaar ships jointly. They were constructed during the 1980s and 1990s with specialized components provided by each participating country.
For Ukraine, receiving these ships represents not just a practical enhancement but also an important symbolic gesture demonstrating European solidarity and support during a challenging time.
