Minister: “It is necessary”

Sweden’s Minister for Civil Defense, Carl-Oskar Bohlin, revealed to TV4 Nyheterna that the government has decided to arm the Coast Guard’s vessels with both fixed weapons platforms and heavier reinforcement weapons.

– We see that the security situation makes increased armament necessary, says Carl-Oskar Bohlin.

Able to Handle Multiple Threats

The Coast Guard has, until now, only had pistols as standard equipment, but will in the future need to handle far more advanced threats.

– We are facing threats from drones and other modern challenges that require better protection and greater firepower, says the minister.

Sweden Lags Behind Other Countries

According to Carl-Oskar Bohlin, Sweden is already behind, as many other countries have already armed their coast guards.

– Sweden stands out by not having armed coastal vessels. It’s quite natural to have the capacity for self-defense and to ensure the safety of personnel, he explains.

Proposal Ready Next Year

The government expects the Coast Guard to have a specific armament proposal ready by the beginning of next year. The goal is clear: to quickly enhance security at sea and in coastal areas.

This upgrade marks a significant shift in Swedish defense and security policy, where increased preparedness has become a key term in line with a more uncertain global threat landscape.
