When vacation time approaches, many Danes pack laptops, tablets, and smartphones alongside sunscreen and swimwear.

But even though internet access is almost necessary on holiday trips nowadays, what’s marketed as “Free WiFi” might turn out to be an expensive acquaintance.

According to a new survey by the Danish Society of Engineers, IDA, 55 percent of Danes often or always use open WiFi networks on vacation, while only seven percent completely avoid them. However, despite the convenience, IDA’s IT security expert, Jørn Guldberg, warns that open networks often harbor serious risks.

Hackers’ Hidden Traps

“There’s nothing inherently wrong with wanting to be online during your vacation. But even in the most relaxed holiday state, both children and adults should be very aware that ‘Free WiFi’ is not always what it seems,” explains Jørn Guldberg.

Fake WiFi networks, which at first glance look like legitimate connections from the hotel or café, can easily deceive holidaymakers. “Even without the use of artificial intelligence, hackers can easily create a network that looks trustworthy. Once you connect, you’re typically asked to enter various details or create a user account. This gives criminals access to vital data such as usernames and passwords, making the so-called free experience costly,” Guldberg emphasizes.

How to Avoid Being Fooled

To minimize risks, IDA recommends that holidaying Danes always turn off WiFi on their devices.

If you’re in Europe, you might as well use the data included with your mobile plan or download entertainment beforehand at home.

“Also, make sure to update your programs before vacation, and check that you have security programs installed – not just on your computer, but also on your tablet and smartphone. And remember to back up everything before you travel,” advises Jørn Guldberg.

Other effective solutions include installing encryption software and investing in a VPN solution that ensures a secure and encrypted connection to the internet.

Free Can Quickly Become Expensive

Next time you see an offer for free WiFi, it’s worth thinking twice. What initially seems attractive and convenient can quickly turn into an expensive affair if you don’t take precautions. In other words, free WiFi isn’t always completely free.
