Canada has canceled its planned digital services tax aimed at large American tech companies to resume crucial trade negotiations with the US.

The tax was set to take effect on Monday, but the decision to withdraw the proposal came late on Sunday.

Pressure from the US Leads to U-turn

The digital tax would have targeted major tech giants like Amazon, Meta, Google, and Apple with a 3 percent levy on their digital revenues from Canadian users if annual sales exceeded $20 million.

However, US President Donald Trump had previously warned Canada that such a tax would be considered an “explicit attack” on American businesses.

Trump threatened additional tariffs on Canadian goods, abruptly halting trade talks between the two countries last week.

New Optimism in Trade Talks

With Canada’s decision to remove the tax, Prime Minister Mark Carney and President Trump are now restarting discussions, with the hope of reaching an agreement by July 21.

Canada’s Ministry of Finance emphasized that the original intent of the tax was to ensure that large tech firms pay taxes on the income they generate from Canadian consumers. However, Canada has always preferred a joint international solution.

Trade Relations at Stake

Canada is the US’s second-largest trading partner after Mexico and the largest importer of American goods. Last year, the country purchased around $349.4 billion in US goods, while exports to the US amounted to $412.7 billion. Therefore, the negotiations are significant for the economy on both sides of the border.

While the cancellation of the digital tax initially creates optimism around trade talks, Trump maintains earlier imposed tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, which remain at 50 percent.

With the latest development, both countries are now back at the negotiating table with a short deadline to achieve a satisfactory agreement for both parties.
