Forest Fire Turns into Bloody Ambush: Two Firefighters Killed in Idaho
An arsonist took the lives of two firefighters in a targeted attack during a fire mission. Now an entire community is left in shock and mourning, while a third firefighter fights for life.
Sunday afternoon was supposed to be just another day in the battle against the flames for the firefighters on Canfield Mountain near Coeur d’Alene in northern Idaho. But the day turned tragic and deadly when a man with a powerful firearm set the forest ablaze and lay in ambush for the firefighters.
From Rescue Operation to Nightmare
According to police, the firefighters were called to a fire around 1:30 PM. Shortly after arriving, the rescue crew came under intense gunfire.
Two of the firefighters were killed instantly, while a third was severely injured and is now hospitalized in a critical but stable condition.
Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris said at a press conference:
“We believe the perpetrator started the fire himself and that the attack was planned and targeted. The firefighters never stood a chance.”
Authorities later confirmed that the perpetrator acted alone and was found dead in the forest area where he had been shooting at the rescue workers.
Police were able to locate the man’s hideout through mobile data while the flames continued to spread.

This is a heinous direct attack on our brave firefighters. I urge everyone in Idaho to keep them and their families in their thoughts as we try to understand what happened.
