Germany Offers Patriot Missiles to Ukraine as Merz Warns of Urgency
The German chancellor says Berlin is prepared to buy additional U.S.-made Patriot missile systems to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced at a conference in Rome that Germany is ready to purchase additional American-made Patriot air defense systems to send to Ukraine.
The move comes amid Russia’s escalating missile strikes and underscores what Merz described as the “urgent” need to reinforce Ukraine’s air defenses.
“This initiative enjoys broad political support both in Germany and across Europe,” Merz said, according to Portalobronny.se.pl. “We are prepared to acquire more Patriot systems from the United States to make them available to Ukraine.”
The German government has already submitted a formal request to Washington to supply two more Patriot batteries. This builds on the U.S.’s earlier delivery of three Patriot systems under President Joe Biden’s administration.
The Patriots have proven vital for Ukraine, helping defend against advanced Russian threats, including Iskander-M, Kalibr, and Kinzhal missiles. In May 2023, a Ukrainian Patriot battery near Kyiv famously shot down a Russian Kinzhal hypersonic missile—a landmark moment that highlighted the system’s effectiveness against some of Moscow’s most sophisticated weapons.
By mid-2025, Ukraine is expected to have at least three operational Patriot batteries positioned to protect major cities like Kyiv, Dnipro, and Lviv.
Germany’s latest initiative could significantly bolster Ukraine’s ability to fend off future attacks and sends yet another strong signal of Western commitment to Kyiv’s defense.
