Trump Sharpens Rhetoric Against Putin After Drone Strikes on Ukraine
The US announces new defensive weapons after extensive Russian drone attacks on Ukrainian cities.
The United States has pledged to deliver new defensive weapons following extensive Russian drone strikes on Ukrainian cities.
On Monday night, Russia launched one of the largest drone attacks on Ukraine since the invasion began in 2022. Ukraine’s air defense reported that 136 Russian drones targeted various cities, with 108 intercepted or neutralized. The remaining 28 hit ten different locations, causing significant damage.
President Donald Trump responded swiftly to the attacks, sharply criticizing Russian leader Vladimir Putin and announcing a substantial increase in U.S. military support to Ukraine.
“Putin has surprised many with his actions. He talks politely, then bombs at night. There’s a problem there,” Trump told reporters Sunday evening.
He also confirmed that the U.S. will send additional Patriot missile systems to Ukraine. These systems, proven highly effective at shooting down drones, missiles, and even hypersonic weapons, have become a cornerstone of Ukraine’s defense since their deployment last year.
“We will send various components of advanced military equipment to Ukraine. They are paying one hundred percent for the gear, and that’s how we want it,” Trump emphasized.
For months, the American president has sought a ceasefire and peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia — so far without success. Now, Trump appears to be taking a firmer stance.
Monday’s drone strikes come as Trump is expected to unveil a new Ukraine-Russia policy and meet with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Washington.
Meanwhile, Senator Lindsey Graham suggested Trump may impose harsh sanctions on countries trading with Russia, hoping to pressure Putin to the negotiating table.
“He’s trying to get Putin to the table, but Putin isn’t responding,” Graham said.
Keith Kellogg, Trump’s special envoy for Russia-Ukraine affairs, arrived in Kyiv on Monday to reaffirm U.S. support.
“Peace through strength is President Donald Trump’s guiding principle, and we support this approach,” said Andriy Yermak, head of the Ukrainian presidential office, in an official statement.
With this new wave of military escalation from the U.S., it’s clear the president will no longer tolerate Putin’s ongoing aggression without decisive countermeasures.
