Pam Bondi Announces Lawsuits Against 35 Sanctuary Cities
“Sanctuary cities pose a danger to American citizens,” warns the U.S. Attorney General.
The U.S. Attorney General, Pam Bondi, has issued strong accusations against 35 American cities and states that, according to her, are putting citizens’ safety at risk.
These areas are known as “sanctuary cities,” referring to cities or jurisdictions that choose not to actively cooperate with federal immigration authorities in enforcing immigration laws.
Often, these cities refuse to detain undocumented immigrants even when immigration authorities request it.
The list, recently published by the Department of Justice (DOJ), includes major states such as California, New York, Colorado, and Illinois — all of which have already been involved in legal clashes due to their immigration policies.
“These jurisdictions are deliberately obstructing law enforcement and endangering American citizens,” Pam Bondi stated in a press release. She underscored that the department will not hesitate to bring further lawsuits against cities and states that do not cooperate.
Bondi emphasized that the DOJ will continue to work closely with Homeland Security to eliminate what she calls “harmful” policies.
Previous lawsuits have produced mixed results. For example, a court in Illinois dismissed the DOJ’s case, arguing that the state’s policy was protected under the U.S. Constitution.
On the other hand, the department experienced success in Louisville, Kentucky, which changed its policy following a legal warning from the DOJ.
According to Bondi and the Trump administration, the goal is clear: to end practices where local authorities ignore federal immigration laws.
“This is an opportunity for cities and states to work with us to ensure the safety of American citizens,” said a DOJ spokesperson.
