A full military takeover risks creating unimaginable humanitarian consequences for civilians and hostages in the area, warns a senior UN official.

Risk of a Humanitarian Catastrophe

According to Israeli media, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is pushing for a total reoccupation of the Gaza Strip. The plan, to be discussed by Israel’s security cabinet, is raising fears within the UN, which warns it could lead to “catastrophic consequences” for the millions of Palestinian civilians living in the area.

“It would be deeply alarming and could endanger the lives of millions of Palestinians, as well as potentially threaten the safety of the Israeli hostages still in Gaza,” cautioned the UN Assistant Secretary-General Miroslav Jenča.

Internal Disagreement in Israel Over Strategy

Although Israeli media quote senior officials discussing a “full conquest of Gaza,” the strategy faces internal opposition. According to multiple reports, Israel’s army chief and other military leaders have voiced resistance to a total occupation.

The disagreement became apparent when an Israeli official stated: “If the army chief disagrees, he should resign.”

Acute Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

The situation in Gaza is already described as critical. The UN reports that more than 1,200 Palestinians have been killed since May, many during attempts to secure food and supplies. Meanwhile, Gaza’s health ministry under Hamas has stated that 154 people – including 89 children – have died from hunger since October.

Jenča demands immediate access for humanitarian aid, stating that Israel’s ongoing restrictions make the relief efforts “grossly inadequate.”

“A man-made mass famine is unfolding in Gaza. The aid reaching the territory falls far short of what’s needed,” Jenča emphasizes.

The UN’s message is clear: further escalation in Gaza will only worsen an already dire situation. The call is therefore for an immediate ceasefire and the unconditional release of all hostages to prevent further human suffering.
