National Mourning After Deadly Derailment

Portugal has declared a national day of mourning after one of the worst transport accidents in recent times. On Wednesday evening, 15 people lost their lives when a carriage from Lisbon’s famed Elevador da Glória derailed and crashed into a building in the city center. An additional 18 people were injured – five of them seriously.

Authorities have confirmed that among the victims are also foreign tourists.

Eyewitnesses: “Like a Cardboard Box Collapsing”

Shocked witnesses described how the car lost control and sped down the steep, narrow street. “It hit the building with brutal force and collapsed like a cardboard box,” Teresa d’Avó told Portuguese television.

Another witness explained that the tram toppled onto a pedestrian who was standing on the sidewalk.

An Icon Turned to Wreckage

The Elevador da Glória opened in 1885 and is classified as a national monument. It connects the city center with Bairro Alto – an area known for its vibrant nightlife – and transports around 3 million passengers annually.

The yellow and white funicular had long served as a symbol of Lisbon’s charm, but on Wednesday night it became an image of grief. Mayor Carlos Moedas called the accident “a tragic day for our city.”

Authorities Promise Answers

The police have launched an official investigation, while transport company Carris emphasizes that all maintenance protocols had been followed. Lisbon’s city council has temporarily suspended other tram lines to carry out immediate safety inspections.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed hope that the cause will soon be determined. International leaders have also sent their condolences, including EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

A Chaotic Moment That Changed Everything

In a matter of seconds, a historic attraction was turned into the site of a disaster. Portugal is left with grief, unanswered questions – and an urgent need to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.
