Donald Trump has ordered the U.S. Attorney General to compile a list of lawyers and law firms he claims are filing “baseless” lawsuits against his administration. His goal? To punish them with sanctions, including revoking their security clearances or terminating their government contracts.

The Trump administration has already targeted several major law firms involved in legal cases against him or his political allies. Notably, he has previously stripped security clearances from employees at firms such as Paul Weiss, Perkins Coie, and Covington & Burling—a move that has raised alarm among legal professionals and constitutional experts.

Trump’s criticism is especially aimed at large firms he accuses of weaponizing the legal system for political gain and undermining national security and the electoral process.

Critics, however, warn that Trump is abusing presidential power to intimidate opposition and threaten the independence of the legal profession.

One high-profile example is the case against Paul Weiss, which saw the firm lose government contracts and clearances.

Sanctions were only lifted after the firm agreed to drop internal diversity and inclusion policies and pledged $40 million in pro bono legal services.

Lawyers Facing Silence Through Sanctions

Legal experts are now sounding the alarm over a dangerous precedent where lawyers may be silenced through political pressure, threatening the independence of the judiciary. One attorney has already resigned in protest, citing the legal profession’s lack of resistance to what she called Trump’s authoritarian tactics.

At the same time, Trump is urging the Attorney General to review legal cases going back eight years to find additional attorneys eligible for sanctions.

This latest development is drawing concern far beyond U.S. borders, as the right of legal professionals to pursue cases without fear of political retaliation is seen as a foundational pillar of democratic societies.
