As missiles fall over Kyiv, the USA shows two vastly different faces towards Russia. Officially, the USA supports NATO’s stance, viewing Russia as a lasting threat. However, former President Donald Trump speaks in a completely different direction.

After the meeting with Trump, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized that everyone in the alliance agrees:

“Russia is the long-term threat to NATO’s territory.“

But shortly after, Trump called it a “big concession” that Putin does not want to take all of Ukraine – and said that it will be “hard” for Ukraine to get Crimea back. In Kyiv, this provokes anger. Resident Mykhailo Morich says:

“Trump is completely pro-Russian. It’s a huge disgrace.”

At the same time, it is reported that a North Korean missile was likely behind the deadly attack on Kyiv on Thursday. Ukrainian President Zelenskyj calls it another proof “of the criminal nature of the alliance between Russia and Pyongyang.”

The USA stands with one foot in NATO – and one in unclear sympathy with the enemy. This sends dangerous signals in an already explosive conflict.
