For the first time since Donald Trump assumed the presidency, British forces have participated in airstrikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen.

The attack was carried out in cooperation with the United States and is part of an intensified military campaign that, since mid-March, has included over 800 American airstrikes under the name Operation Rough Rider.

According to the British Ministry of Defence, the strike hit “a cluster of buildings used by the Houthis to manufacture drones of the type used in attacks on shipping traffic in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.” The targets were located approximately 15 miles south of the capital, Sana’a.

Economic Pressure and Threats to Global Shipping

British Defense Secretary John Healey explained the decision in light of the threat posed by the Houthi movement to global trade. “This action was carried out in response to an ongoing threat from the Houthis against freedom of navigation,” Healey said, emphasizing that a 55% drop in Red Sea shipping has already had multi-billion-dollar consequences and poses a risk to the UK’s economic security.

Since January 2024, British forces have sporadically participated in US-led strikes, but this nighttime mission marks the UK’s first involvement in the new, more aggressive phase of the campaign.

RAF Engages with Precision Bombs

The Royal Air Force took part using Typhoon FGR4 fighter jets, which launched Paveway IV precision bombs at the targets after nightfall. According to the Ministry of Defence, the timing was chosen to minimize the risk of civilian casualties. However, no public information has been released about the extent of the damage or whether there were any fatalities.

U.S. Central Command has not yet commented on the joint strike, which came just days after an American airstrike hit a prison and killed at least 68 people – primarily African migrants.

The Houthis and Tensions with Iran

The goal of Operation Rough Rider is to degrade the Houthis’ ability to attack international vessels and targets in Israel. The group is considered a key player in Iran’s so-called “Axis of Resistance” and has attacked both regional shipping and Israeli targets. Meanwhile, the Trump administration continues negotiations with Iran over its advanced nuclear program.

With the UK now actively involved, the Western military stance against the Houthis appears to have been reinforced – adding yet another international dimension to the conflict in Yemen.
