Pentagon Confirms: Officially Accepted Qatar’s Aircraft Gift to Trump
The Pentagon has now put a preliminary conclusion in the case of the luxurious Boeing 747 plane from Qatar.
The aircraft has been officially accepted as a gift and is to be used as the forthcoming Air Force One for President Donald Trump.
The decision, announced by Defense Department spokesman Sean Parnell, has sparked both political and legal controversy. “The Secretary of Defense has accepted a Boeing 747 plane from Qatar in accordance with all federal regulations and guidelines,” stated Parnell, referring further inquiries to the U.S. Air Force.
Valued at approximately 400 million dollars, the plane is described as a “flying palace.” However, it may turn out to be an expensive gift. According to NBC News, modifications to presidential standards could cost up to 1 billion dollars and take several years to complete.
Security and ethics experts from both sides of the political spectrum have expressed concerns about the decision.
Both Democratic and Republican politicians warn of potential constitutional violations, as the U.S. Constitution prohibits officials from receiving gifts from foreign governments without Congress’ approval.
Former Vice President Mike Pence also questions the decision, calling it directly risky.
“It is incompatible with our security and intelligence needs. I hope the president reconsiders,” he said in an interview with Meet the Press.
President Trump, however, has defended the decision, calling the gift a great gesture.
The controversy did not diminish when South Africa’s President Ramaphosa during a meeting with Trump commented with a twinkle in his eye: “I regret that I don’t have a plane to give you.” “I wish you did,” Trump replied.
With the official acceptance, the matter has entered a new phase where it is now up to officials and military instances to ensure that the plane can meet the requirements for the world’s most powerful official.
The criticism continues unabated, and it is clear that the gift from Doha makes more than the engines roar. Especially after it emerged that it was the Americans who initiated the discussion about the aircraft, which you can read more about here.
