Spanish Armored Vehicles Roll into Ukraine – Liut Brigade Receives Significant Reinforcement
Spain has deepened its military involvement in Ukraine by sending combat-ready Pegaso BMR M-600 armored personnel carriers to the country’s Liut Brigade.
This latest reinforcement marks a shift from earlier deliveries, which primarily consisted of medical variants, to now include combat-configured vehicles.
From Medical Support to Frontline Force
As early as January 2024, Spain delivered modernized medical versions of the BMR M-600, upgraded by the Spanish defense contractor TECNOVE.
At the time, these vehicles were solely intended for casualty evacuation and transporting medical personnel. However, recent photos published on the military-focused Telegram channel Tysk now show armored vehicles equipped with anti-drone cages—an unmistakable sign of frontline combat deployment.
One of the images appears to show a BMR-600 VRAC, a specialized variant used for chemical reconnaissance that has previously been spotted in Ukraine. This suggests that Spain may also have included standard troop-carrying versions in its most recent aid packages.

A Robust and Versatile Combat Platform
The BMR M-600 was developed in the 1970s as a 6×6 wheeled armored personnel carrier and has been a cornerstone of Spain’s ground forces ever since. The standard model can carry 11 troops plus a two-person crew and features aluminum armor.
Powered by a 310-horsepower Pegaso 9157/8 diesel engine, the BMR can reach speeds of up to 100 km/h (62 mph). It is amphibious and, depending on the variant, can be fitted with twin water jets for enhanced maneuverability in aquatic environments.
The rear troop compartment is accessible via a ramp and doors, while roof hatches allow for rapid egress or use of personal weapons from inside the vehicle.
Spain Sends a Message
Until now, Spain has been relatively cautious about sending combat hardware to Ukraine. But this shipment signals a clear change in posture. Analysts interpret the delivery as a major shift in Spain’s military assistance, coinciding with NATO’s calls for enhanced air defense and logistical support for Ukraine.
“The Spanish BMR-600 is a solid and flexible vehicle that can help expand Ukraine’s operational options in the combat zone,” an anonymous military analyst told Tysk.
A New Chapter for the Liut Brigade
The Liut Brigade, which operates under Ukraine’s national police, has increasingly participated in frontline operations. This new focus on deploying heavy armored vehicles greatly boosts the brigade’s combat capabilities. Designed to withstand unpredictable terrain and harsh frontline conditions, the BMR offers tangible tactical advantages: improved protection, increased mobility, and greater firepower.
In other words, Spain hasn’t just sent vehicles—it has delivered a strategic message of growing European commitment to a war that shows no signs of winding down. It’s a contribution that rolls directly into the heart of Europe’s volatile landscape, both militarily and symbolically.
