It was with cold clarity that Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich declared on Tuesday that “Gaza will be completely destroyed.”

An announcement made during a conference on West Bank settlements, according to The Guardian, which quickly gained global attention.

The statement came a day after the Israeli security cabinet approved “Operation Gideon’s Chariots” – a plan that, according to officials, involves a complete military takeover of the entire Gaza Strip.

In addition to the threat of total destruction, Smotrich made it clear that Palestinian civilians would be sent southward to a so-called humanitarian area “without Hamas or terrorism,” after which, according to the minister, “they will start leaving en masse to third countries.”

Global Criticism and Legal Ramifications

Reactions were swift. British Middle East Minister Hamish Falconer declared that “any attempt to annex land in Gaza would be unacceptable.”

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern over the plan’s consequences: “It will inevitably lead to countless more civilian casualties and further destruction of Gaza.”

Meanwhile, international law experts are pointing to potential breaches of international law.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has already issued arrest warrants for Prime Minister Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Gallant, with further indictments in preparation.

A Population Displaced and Starving

Since the war began in October 2023, nearly all of Gaza’s 2.3 million population has been displaced multiple times.

More than 52,000 people have been killed in the Israeli offensive, and a comprehensive blockade has since March cut off the population from essential humanitarian aid.

Hamas has responded by rejecting further negotiations as long as what they call the “war of starvation and extermination” continues.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces have continued airstrikes, most recently against the Bureij camp, where at least 29 people were killed.

Regional Implications and Uncertainty for the Future

Israel has made it clear that the new operation will not commence until Donald Trump concludes his upcoming visit to the Middle East.

Meanwhile, neighboring countries Egypt and Jordan have refused to accept refugees from Gaza, as they do not want to participate in what they describe as “ethnic cleansing.”
