Mazda Recalls Over 183,000 Vehicles: Safety Flaws in Airbags and Warning Lights
Two separate software issues are forcing Mazda to recall more than 183,000 vehicles across three popular models.
Mazda has issued a recall affecting a total of 183,656 vehicles due to two safety-related defects. One issue involves airbags that may fail to deploy in a crash, while the other concerns a warning light malfunction linked to the vehicle’s stability control system.
Airbag Fault Impacts Mazda3 and CX-30
The majority of affected vehicles—171,412 units of the 2024-2025 Mazda3 and CX-30—are being recalled due to a software problem in the airbag sensors. Under specific low battery conditions, the sensors can register a false error and deactivate the airbags, potentially increasing the risk of injury in a collision.
Mazda traced the issue back to instances where the ignition was left in the “ON” position without starting the engine, which caused the battery to drain and later triggered the airbag warning light upon restart. Though initially attributed to user behavior, further investigation revealed a need for corrective action.
To resolve the issue, dealers will either update the airbag sensor software or replace the sensor unit at no cost to the owner. Notification letters are expected to be mailed by July 28.

Stability Control Light Glitch in Mazda MX-5
A separate recall affects 12,244 units of the 2024-2025 Mazda MX-5, due to a malfunction in the warning indicator for the traction and dynamic stability control systems. The affected vehicles may not display a warning light when these systems encounter a problem, increasing the potential for accidents.
The defect was identified by a supplier earlier this year, prompting Mazda to roll out updated software in new production runs starting in March. Vehicles already on the road will receive a free replacement of the dynamic stability control unit, with owner notifications expected by July 21.
What Owners Need to Know
Mazda owners unsure whether their vehicle is affected can contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 (option 6) or check their vehicle identification number in the official NHTSA recall database.
While no injuries or crashes have been reported so far, Mazda is taking preemptive action to prevent potential hazards. Despite their digital nature, these software issues may have serious consequences for the safety performance of the affected vehicles.
