The group was en route to Gaza with humanitarian aid but was intercepted by the Israeli navy and taken to the port city of Ashdod, where they were detained.

Symbolic Mission Halted by Military

The British-flagged ship Madleen was heading for Gaza carrying a small amount of aid — a symbolic gesture against Israel’s 18-year blockade of the Palestinian territory.

According to the Israeli TV channel Kan, the activists were arrested off the coast of Egypt early Monday morning. Authorities immediately treated the case as a matter of national security.

Thunberg was quickly deported, and the Israeli Foreign Ministry released photos of her onboard a plane bound for Sweden via France. “Greta Thunberg just departed Israel on a flight to Sweden,” the ministry posted tersely on social media platform X.

Activists Refuse to Sign

While four activists have voluntarily left Israel, the remaining eight are refusing to sign their deportation papers.

According to Israeli law, this means they must first appear before a judge. The organization Adalah, which provides legal assistance, reported on Tuesday morning that their lawyers are en route to Givon Prison in Ramleh, where the detainees are being held.

“We have now met with 11 of the 12 detained volunteers. Some are refusing to leave Israel without judicial review,” Adalah said in a press release.

The organization stated it had made “repeated requests” to gain access to their clients.

International Criticism and Media Attention

The Israeli government’s response to Thunberg’s participation in the flotilla has sparked both support and criticism worldwide.

Media outlets and NGOs have drawn attention to both the diplomatic dispute and the human rights dimensions of the case.
