Amid escalating conflicts in the Middle East, Iran is now threatening to block the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most crucial oil route.

A move that could potentially send shockwaves through the global economy and energy supply.

Iranian General Abdolrahim Musawi declared on Wednesday, “We will continue to attack any target related to the Zionist regime’s invasion, without any borders.” This statement came just days after Israel’s attack on Iranian targets, intensifying the diplomatic and military crisis in the region.

The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the open seas, is a lifeline in the world’s oil infrastructure.

Each day, about 18 million barrels of oil pass through this narrow passage – equivalent to roughly 20 percent of the global daily consumption.

In the past, Iran has repeatedly threatened to block the strait, but has never followed through. This time, however, the tone is different. The British newspaper Financial Times reports that the cost of chartering large tankers through the Strait of Hormuz has more than doubled since Israel’s latest strike. Shell CEO Wael Sawan states: “If this artery is blocked, it will have enormous consequences for global trade.”

On the diplomatic front, Iran has called for a meeting with the foreign ministers of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom in Geneva.

Meanwhile, rhetoric between Iran and the United States is escalating, following President Donald Trump’s claim that Iran “has reached out to negotiate” — a statement the Iranian UN delegation has dismissed as “utterly false.”

As the world holds its breath, a potential blockade of Hormuz threatens to become much more than a regional showdown.

It’s a situation where geopolitics, energy markets, and superpower interests merge into a potentially explosive cocktail.
