Divided and Vulnerable: Hamas’ Desperate Struggle in Gaza
Hamas is under pressure internally and externally. Israel attacks relentlessly, internal conflicts escalate, and support from Iran is faltering. Hamas faces its toughest challenge ever.
Less than two years ago, Hamas demonstrated its military strength with a violent attack on Israel that resulted in 1,200 deaths and 253 hostages taken.
Today, the situation is significantly different: The Palestinian group is fighting not only for its political survival but also for its physical existence.
Gaza lies in ruins after nearly two years of intense conflict with Israeli forces, and Hamas’ previous control over the enclave is eroding.
Rebellion from Within
Besides the ongoing attacks from Israel, Hamas is battling increasing internal division.
Several clans in Gaza are taking advantage of Hamas’ weakened state and are now challenging the group’s authority.
The most notable challenge comes from Yasser Abu Shabab, a Palestinian Bedouin leader, who has established control over parts of the Rafah area.
Hamas is desperately trying to capture him, but he operates effectively under the protection of Israeli troops.

Support from Iran Wavers
Hamas’ challenges are further compounded by the uncertainty surrounding Iran’s support.
Following Israel’s intense bombings against Iran, which killed a central Iranian Revolutionary Guard officer responsible for cooperation with Hamas, support from Tehran is less assured than before.
Palestinian analyst Akram Attallah emphasizes to Reuters how dire the situation has become for Hamas: “That Hamas now has enemies from its own culture is extremely dangerous. It’s a threat until it is resolved.”
A Question of Survival
Hamas is thus fighting a desperate battle on multiple fronts.
According to Israeli sources, up to 20,000 Hamas fighters have been killed, and the group’s once extensive tunnel network is almost completely destroyed.
Whether Hamas will survive remains to be seen – but right now, the outlook is bleak for the movement.
