The living legend Manny Pacquiao is making a comeback in a title fight against WBC World Champion Mario Barrios – three years after his last fight.

An Unexpected Return

Manny Pacquiao, 46, has officially announced his return to professional boxing.

The former eight-division world champion is coming back to face 30-year-old WBC World Champion Mario Barrios in Las Vegas on July 19.

The fight will headline a Premier Boxing Champions event at the MGM Grand, and the Filipino boxing icon promises he is ready to make history once again.

“I’m back. On July 19, I return to the ring to face WBC World Champion Mario Barrios at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Let’s make history!” Pacquiao wrote on X.

Barrios’ Upward Trajectory

Mario Barrios, with a record of 29-2-1 (18 KOs), was elevated to full champion after he defeated Yordenis Ugas and later held Abel Ramos to a draw.

Despite solid technique and a sturdy chin, he has gained a reputation as one of the weaker belt holders in the welterweight division.

His upcoming fight against Pacquiao will undoubtedly be the most high-profile of his career.

Since his loss to Yordenis Ugas in 2021, where he lost his WBA belt, Pacquiao has primarily dedicated his time to politics and participated in a criticized exhibition match against Japanese kickboxer Rukiya Anpo as recently as 2024.

In that match, his age was apparent, and several experts have expressed concern for his health ahead of the upcoming fight.

Nevertheless, Pacquiao now moves up to number five on the WBC’s official rankings, making his way to a title fight possible – a decision that has already sparked debate in boxing circles.

History in Sight

If Pacquiao wins against Barrios, it will not only cement his status as one of the sport’s most enduring athletes but also as one of the oldest to win a world championship title.

The fight promises to be a mixture of nostalgia and new reality, where an aging warrior grapples with a new era.

Regardless of the outcome, one thing is clear: Pacquiao is far from done challenging the limits of what’s possible in the boxing ring.
