Private Meeting Amid Historic Events

On April 26, an important meeting took place in Rome, where U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy came together in connection with Pope Francis’ funeral. It marked the first face-to-face encounter between the two leaders since their tense meeting in Washington back in February.

According to the White House, the meeting was described as “very productive,” as confirmed by communications director Steven Cheung in a brief statement. Zelenskyy’s office also confirmed the meeting but provided no additional details.

Peace Negotiations on the Brink

The meeting in Rome comes at a critical moment for negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. The day before, Trump stated that there had been “productive talks” between his special envoy and Russian leadership.

“We’re calling for a high-level meeting between Kyiv and Moscow to close a deal,” Trump said. The U.S. president has previously made it clear that Washington could withdraw its support for peace efforts if an agreement is not reached soon.

Crimea Crisis and Other Points of Contention

Although the atmosphere in Rome was calmer than in Washington, the underlying disagreements remain significant. The U.S. has proposed legally recognizing Crimea as Russian territory, a move Ukraine and its European allies consider an unacceptable “red line.”

Other contentious issues include the timeline for lifting sanctions on Russia, security guarantees for Ukraine, and potential financial compensation for the war-torn country.

Zelenskyy Maintains His Symbolism

During the meeting in Rome, Zelenskyy once again signaled his solidarity with Ukrainian soldiers by wearing dark military-inspired clothing—a dark button-up shirt without a tie and a dark jacket. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Zelenskyy has emphasized that his choice of attire is a deliberate gesture of support for those fighting on the frontlines.
